VISION: TO PREVENT HORSE LAMENESS USING RESEARCH AND DESIGN INNOVATION
Owners, riders, trainers, veterinarians, and caretakers of athletic horses will have peace of mind knowing that they are doing their very best to keep their horses happy and sound.
MISSION: DEVELOP NOVEL APPROACHES TO LOWER LIMB WEAR THAT PREVENTS LAMENESS, OR HASTENS RECOVERY FROM INJURY.
Horses of all athletic abilities will benefit from lower limb protective wear created through a novel and continuous process of design innovation, supported by preclinical and clinical validation. This will help prevent lameness in athletic horses.
STRATEGY: PROVIDE FOR THE EQUINE INDUSTRY, NEW SAFETY SOLUTIONS BASED ON CLINICAL AND SCIENTIFIC DATA
AERI will establish a research program for internal studies and sponsored external research that will improve our understanding of lower limb injury risk and help us design novel approaches to reduce lameness. Our innovative technologies will deliver measurably effective lower limb protection that is superior to existing lower limb wear. Our new technology will be publically available when clinical and scientific data demonstrate clear benefit from our designs.
LONG TERM STRATEGY FOR FUTURE RESEARCH
AERI recognizes that the lower limb is a complex system including the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and the hoof. While the initial focus of our research is on the development of methods to prevent cumulative or acute injury to the soft tissues of the lower limb, as we make progress in this area our research will expand to include a number of other approaches.
Our future research will include:
- The effects of fatigue on joint vulnerability
- The role of hoof placement in injury
- The potential to reduce injury risk through novel shoeing approaches
- Training approaches for maintaining optimal soundness
- Research into rehabilitation methods for optimal recovery from lameness
